New Method Detects Prostate Cancer With Greater Accuracy: Biopsy With Fusion Technology
The innovative biopsy method with Fusion technology enriches the arsenal of modern urology in the battle against prostate cancer.
Prostate Cancer is the most common male malignancy, as approximately 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with this disease during their lifetime. Although it is a malignancy that develops at a slow rate, when symptoms appear the disease is already advanced. With the awareness of the public about Prostate Cancer, and with the tools available to modern urology, the diagnosis of the disease at an early stage, as well as its complete cure, becomes successful.
A series of special tests is the internationally accepted way to diagnose and treat the disease early, before the patient's "window of opportunity" for a cure is lost. Men at risk based on age and family history are evaluated by a Urologist, which includes evaluation of the PSA value with a blood test and a digital prostate exam.
If cancer is clinically suspected, the next step is confirmation, with a procedure called a Prostate Biopsy. Biopsy aims to take samples from the organ which are submitted to a Histopathological Examination, in order to identify foci of cancer cells. It is done under ultrasound guidance either through the rectum (rectal) or through the perineum (diaperineal).
In cases where the suspicious area is visible on the ultrasound, the biopsy is done targeted. When the focus is not visualized by ultrasound - which is the most common - the image is taken following a specific protocol from "random" points where the disease is likely to be found.
