Axial Pylegrography (Urography)

Axial Pyelography is a technique for evaluating the urinary system with very high specificity and sensitivity in highlighting stones, congenital anomalies, and renal masses.

It has an absolute indication in the investigation of hematuria offering important information to the clinician.

Intravenous administration of iodinated contrast agent is required to perform the examination.

BEFORE SCHEDULING ANY EXAMINATION THE FOLLOWING ARE NECESSARY:

  • In case there is a possibility of pregnancy you should inform the secretariat or the qualified staff of the department;
  • It is necessary to arrive 15 minutes before the time the examination is scheduled, in order to have time to arrange procedural matters;
  • You should provide previous examinations and especially CT or MRI scans for comparison (on CD/DVD). In case the previous examinations have been carried out in our department (from 2016 and on) there is no need to present their files, since they are stored in the hospital's electronic file;
  • If you have a history of an allergic reaction to a previous administration of iodinated contrast medium (such as in a CT scan or intravenous pyelography) or you have a history of multiple allergies, you should inform the department's secretary before scheduling the exam;
  • In the event that an examination will be performed where there is a possibility that an iodinated contrast agent will be administered, it is necessary to present a recent (last semester) blood urea and creatinine test. The same applies if you are diabetic or have any problem with your kidney function;
  • If you are taking the anti-diabetic drug Metformin (available in various commercial formulations), you should inform the department's secretariat when planning the examination;
  • In any other case, you can normally take the medicines prescribed by your doctor;
